Before I was a photographer, I spent thirteen years practicing law.
I mention it because it shapes how I think about a professional headshot. I’ve sat on the other side of the table, scrolling through attorney bios before a meeting and forming an opinion before anyone spoke. In DC — where so much business runs on credibility, introductions, and LinkedIn — that first look carries real weight.
I’m Erica Land, a PPA-certified portrait photographer based in Rockville, and I photograph executives, attorneys, consultants, and association leaders across DC, Bethesda, and McLean. Here’s what I’ve learned about headshots that actually work in this town.
Your photo shows up on your firm bio, your LinkedIn profile, conference programs, press releases, and the screen when you join a call. It has to say competent and trustworthy in the second before someone reads your name.
That’s a narrow target. Too stiff and you look unapproachable. Too casual and you look like you didn’t take it seriously. Getting it right is mostly about expression and posture — and that’s where direction matters far more than the camera.
Before your session, we talk about the message. A litigator may want quiet authority. A consultant or business-development lead usually needs warmth. A nonprofit executive often wants both. I’ll direct your expression, posture, and angle to match — small adjustments that change how a portrait reads.
You won’t be left guessing what to do with your hands. Directing you is my job, and most clients are surprised how quickly it starts to feel easy.
Dress like the most polished version of how your clients already see you. Solid colors and tailored fits photograph best; small busy patterns and shiny fabrics fight the camera. Bring two options — something formal and something one notch softer — and we’ll decide together. (My guide to what not to wear in your headshot goes deeper.)
If you’re a managing partner looking at a team page full of mismatched photos, I also run on-location team headshot days for firms and offices across DC and the suburbs — same lighting and background for everyone, so every profile matches. More on that in my corporate and team headshots guide.
Your headshot is often the first impression you make in a room you haven’t entered yet. Let’s make it one you’re proud of.
