There’s a moment right before a routine starts — the lights come up, the music hasn’t dropped yet, and a whole team of dancers stands there completely still, holding all that energy in. I love that moment. You can feel what’s coming. And when the Fierce Dance Team lets it loose, the whole room lights up.

I’m Erica Land, and I had the joy of photographing the Fierce Dance Team. They’re a family, a community, and a real powerhouse of energy and talent — the kind of group that makes you sit up a little straighter just watching them. Whether you’re one of the dancers or you’re cheering from the sidelines, you feel the passion and dedication they pour into every routine.

What makes this team special

Being part of the Fierce Dance Team means embracing confidence, creativity, and teamwork all at once. These dancers push themselves to express their own individuality while still moving in harmony as a team — which, if you’ve ever tried it, is a genuinely hard and beautiful thing to pull off. Every piece of choreography tells a story, and their performances carry an energy that’s honestly contagious.

That mix of personal spark and collective precision is exactly what I try to catch on camera: the individual in the group, and the group as one.

Confidence on and off the stage

Dance isn’t only about technique. It’s about feeling your best and showing up as your authentic self — and that’s the part that stays with these young dancers long after the music stops. The Fierce Dance Team encourages every member to grow in confidence, building poise and self-expression that reach far beyond the stage.

That’s the piece closest to my own heart. In every session I photograph, my whole aim is to help people see themselves clearly and kindly. Watching dance do that same work — empowering these kids to shine in every part of their lives — is something I never get tired of.
