Professional Dance Photography in Rockville & the DC Metro

There’s a moment at the top of a leap — that split second where a dancer is suspended, fully extended, completely in it — that a phone camera almost never catches. Freezing that moment, cleanly and beautifully, is one of my favorite things to photograph.

I’m Erica Land, a Rockville-based portrait photographer, and dance has become one of the great joys of my work. It’s the heart of my Fierce Images Dance Team, a group of teen and tween dancers who come together for artistic, expressive sessions while inspiring others through movement. Whether you’re a dancer building a portfolio, a studio wanting standout team images, or a parent who wants to honor years of hard work, here’s how professional dance photography can capture what your dancer actually does.

More than a recital photo

Studio recital photos have their place, but professional dance photography is a different thing entirely. It’s built to show your dancer’s artistry — the line, the power, the emotion — in images worthy of the hours they’ve put in.

That means real direction and real technique on my end: catching the peak of a jump, the precise shape of an extension, the expression that sells the movement. The goal is a portrait that makes a dancer look at it and think, that’s exactly how it feels when I dance.

Sessions for every kind of dancer

Dance photography isn’t one thing, so I tailor it to what you need:

  • Individual dancers. Artistic portraits and movement shots that celebrate your style — perfect for the wall, for social media, or just for the pride of it.
  • Competition & audition headshots. Clean, polished headshots and dance shots that meet audition and competition requirements and help your dancer stand out.
  • Portfolio building. A range of images — headshot, movement, and artistic — for dancers pursuing companies, programs, or representation.
  • Dance teams & studios. Cohesive team portraits and individual features that give a studio a strong, unified visual identity for marketing and recruiting.
  • Senior dancers. For dancers in their final year, a session that blends senior portraits with their art — a beautiful way to mark the milestone. (Pairs perfectly with the senior experience.)

Studio power, or on-location energy

In my Rockville studio, we have full control of the light — ideal for dramatic, high-impact movement shots against clean backdrops, with the freedom to capture big jumps and precise shapes safely. On location, we can use architecture, open space, or a striking outdoor setting around the DC metro to add mood and story. Many dancers do a little of both.

Either way, I’ll guide the session so you’re never guessing which move to give me or when — we’ll build a shot list together so you leave with the range you’re after.

What to bring to a dance session

A few things that make a session shine:

  • Two or three looks — your strongest costumes, plus a clean leotard or dancewear for classic technique shots.
  • The moves you’re proudest of. Come with a mental list of your best jumps, extensions, and poses so we make sure to capture them.
  • Hair, makeup, and shoes for each look — pointe shoes, jazz shoes, sneakers, whatever the style calls for.
  • Water and a warm-up. We’ll want you loose and safe before the big movement shots.

Rooted in the Fierce mission

Dance photography fits my larger why: I believe self-esteem is powerful, and few things build a young person’s confidence like seeing their art captured with the seriousness it deserves. That’s the spirit behind Fierce — celebrating dancers as artists, and using photography to help them see their own strength. You can meet the team and see what it’s about in this look at the Fierce Dance Team.

Let’s capture your dancer in full flight

Whether it’s one dancer, a whole team, or a senior sending off years of training, let’s make images that finally match the artistry. The leaps, the lines, the fierce expression — let’s put them where you can see them.

Dance photography FAQ

Who do you photograph — individuals, teams, or both?
Both. I work with individual dancers, dance teams and studios, and senior dancers, plus competition and audition headshots.

Studio or on-location?
Either. My Rockville studio is ideal for dramatic, controlled movement shots; on-location adds mood and story. Many dancers do a mix.

Do you shoot competition and audition headshots?
Yes — clean, polished images that meet common competition and audition requirements and help a dancer stand out.

What should my dancer bring?
Two or three looks (best costumes plus classic dancewear), the right shoes and hair/makeup for each, a list of their strongest moves, and water for warming up.

My dancer is a senior — can we combine dance and senior photos?
Absolutely, and it’s one of my favorites — a session that celebrates both the milestone and the art. It pairs naturally with a senior portrait experience.
