Why I got certified!

I want to tell you about a decision I made for myself, and for you — the person who ends up in front of my camera.

I earned the Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) designation from Professional Photographers of America, at the end of an intensive program that measures both artistic and technical competence. I’m proud of it. But the “why” matters more to me than the certificate, so let me tell you the real story.

The decision came out of a quiet stretch

I’d already been a professional photographer for more than seventeen years when I decided to pursue certification — and it wasn’t to prove something to the industry. It was COVID. Like everyone, I was suddenly home with a strange pause on my hands, and I made a choice about how to spend it: instead of waiting it out, I set out to become a real expert at every part of what I do.

I started with the business side, honestly. I got my finances in order. I wrote out my “why” statement — the actual reason I do this work. I got clear on my differentiating factors, the things that make me different from other photographers. I took class after class to sharpen my craft. And a central piece of all of that was earning my CPP.

What certification actually requires

I think clients deserve to know what the credential means, because it isn’t a badge you buy. Professional Photographers of America is the leading body for certifying imaging professionals, and a Certified Professional Photographer has to complete a written examination, pass an image evaluation of their actual work, and adhere to a strict code of conduct. It’s a credential a relatively small number of photographers nationwide hold. And it doesn’t last forever — certification has to be renewed periodically, which keeps CPPs current and holds us to a continued standard.

In plain terms: someone independent looked hard at both my knowledge and my images and said, yes, she knows what she’s doing.

Why it matters for you

Here’s the part that’s really about you. Certification holds me to a higher standard, and that was the whole point. I wanted to prove to myself that I was capable — and I wanted to show my clients, clearly, that I’m qualified to be the best photographer I can be for them. When you trust me with your senior portraits, your family, or the headshots your business depends on, you’re not just hoping I’m good. You have an outside body’s word that I’ve done the work.

That’s what I wanted for you all along: not to take my skill on faith, but to know it’s real.

A Rockville photographer, serving the whole DC metro

I run my studio in Rockville and photograph clients across the DC metro — Bethesda, McLean, Washington, DC, and beyond. These are my neighbors, and I take it seriously that the photographer down the road should be as skilled and accountable as anyone in a big-city studio. Certification is part of how I keep that promise close to home.

If you’ve been looking for a photographer you can genuinely trust with something that matters, I’d love to be that for you.
