How to Plan a Branding Session That Actually Feels Like You

Most people book the session first and panic about it second.

They fill out the form on a burst of motivation, this is the year I finally get real photos, and then a week later they’re standing in front of their closet at 10 p.m. wondering what on earth a “branding photo” is even supposed to look like. Everything feels either too stuffy or too casual, and the little voice starts up: maybe I should just reschedule.

If that’s you, take a breath. Planning is the part I actually love, and it’s the part I refuse to let you do alone. I’m Erica Land, a Rockville-based portrait photographer, and after twenty years of photographing professionals across Bethesda, McLean, and the Tysons corridor, I can tell you the sessions that feel effortless on the day are the ones we planned well beforehand. Not over-planned. Just thought through, together.

Here’s how I help you get ready, and why a little preparation is the difference between photos you use once and photos that carry your brand for years.

Start with why, not what

Before we talk about a single outfit, I want to know what these images are for.

A consultant refreshing her LinkedIn and speaker bio needs something different from a founder building a full website, and both need something different from an attorney who wants one strong, trustworthy headshot for the firm directory. Same photographer, completely different plan. So when you book, we start with a pre-session consultation, I’ll actually come to you, sit down, and walk through it. What’s the business? Who are you trying to reach? Where are these photos going to live?

Once I understand the goal, everything else gets easier, because every choice we make after that has a reason behind it. You stop guessing and start deciding.

Choosing a location that fits your brand

Where we shoot shapes the whole feel of your images, so we pick it on purpose.

Some people want the clean, controlled look of my Rockville studio, perfect for crisp headshots and a professional backdrop we fully control. Others want to be out in the world their clients recognize. If your business lives in the McLean and Tysons corridor, an on-location session near your office can signal exactly the world you work in. Bethesda Row gives you that walkable, upscale-Main-Street feel. And your own workplace, the practice, the office, the studio you built, is often the best choice of all, because nothing tells your story like the room where you actually do the work.

We’ll settle all of this during your consultation, so you show up on the day knowing precisely where we’re going and why.

Building your wardrobe (this is where I save you)

Clothing is where most people spin out, so let me make it simple.

Bring two to four outfits in solid, brand-appropriate colors. Skip busy patterns, loud graphics, and anything with a visible logo — you want the focus on your face, not on decoding your shirt. If your brand is soft and warm, dress soft and warm; if it’s sharp and modern, lean into that. The goal is for the photos to match everything else you already put out into the world.

And if you’re unsure? That’s what the consultation is for, bring your options and we’ll choose together, so you’re not standing in the studio second-guessing a blazer.

Hair, makeup, and feeling like yourself

You don’t need professional hair and makeup to get great photos, but many people feel more confident with it, and confidence reads in every frame. If you’d like it, tell me early and I can point you toward hair and makeup artists I trust in the area. If you’d rather keep it simple and do your own, that works beautifully too. This is about you feeling like the most rested, put-together version of yourself, not a version you won’t recognize later.

One small tip that helps more than people expect: practice a few looks in the mirror before your session. Not to memorize poses, I’ll guide you through all of that on the day, but just to get familiar with your own smile and your own angles, so the camera feels a little less like a stranger.

What the day actually looks like

Here’s the part that calms most people down: you don’t have to know what to do. That’s my job.

A branding or headshot session usually runs one to three hours, depending on how many looks and locations we’ve planned — plenty of room for wardrobe changes and touch-ups without anyone feeling rushed. I talk you through every step, pose you, fix the small things, and show you the back of the camera early so you can see it’s working. You’re welcome to bring a friend or colleague for moral support, though a smaller room usually means a more relaxed you, so I’d keep the audience light.

Afterward, I carefully prepare your proof gallery, and we sit down together for an in-person reveal and ordering session — I’ll help you choose the images that actually serve your goals, not just the ones that are pretty. Every final image is professionally retouched: clean skin, good color, nothing overdone. You’ll still look like you, on a genuinely good day.

You built something worth showing. Let’s plan it well.

The professionals I photograph are rarely nervous about their work, they’re nervous about being seen. That’s normal, and it’s my favorite part, because helping you feel confident and truly seen is the whole reason I do this. A good plan is how we get there: you show up as yourself, and I take care of the rest.

When you’re ready, book a branding consultation and we’ll map out a session that fits your brand and your goals. You can see more of my branding and headshot work here, and a little about me and my why here.

Planning your session FAQ

How far in advance should I plan a branding or headshot session?
Give yourself a couple of weeks so we can hold your pre-session consultation, sort out wardrobe, and book any hair and makeup you’d like. Professionals in Bethesda, McLean, and Tysons often plan around a rebrand, a new role, or a website launch — earlier is always easier.

How long does a session last?
Usually one to three hours, which includes wardrobe changes and touch-ups. We’ll set the exact length together once I know how many looks and locations you need.

Where will we shoot?
In my Rockville studio, on location near your McLean or Tysons office, around Bethesda Row, or at your own workplace — whatever best matches your brand. We choose during your consultation.

What should I wear and bring?
Two to four outfits in solid, brand-appropriate colors, no loud patterns or logos, plus any props or tools of your trade. Bring options to the consultation and we’ll choose together.

What happens after the shoot?
I prepare your proof gallery and we meet for an in-person reveal and ordering session, where I help you pick the strongest images. Every final photo is professionally retouched and delivered ready for your website, LinkedIn, and print.
