Summer is the sweet spot for senior photos, and here’s why: no bell schedule, no five-thing weeknight, no rush. Just long evenings, warm light, and a senior who finally has a free afternoon to be themselves in front of a camera.

I’m Erica Land, and I photograph seniors all summer across Great Falls Park, Georgetown, and the DC metro from my home base in Rockville. Summer sessions are some of the most fun I do all year, because the season hands us a full toolbox — great light, gorgeous outdoor settings, and room to get creative. Here are the ideas I love most for making a summer senior session feel like you.

Chase the good light outside

The easiest summer magic is getting outdoors in the right light. Late afternoon into golden hour, when the sun goes low and warm, is unbeatable — it wraps everyone in a soft glow no filter can fake. We can play the lush, green-and-leafy look at a park, a riverside glow along the water, or a clean, grown-up feel in the city. We’re spoiled for all three around here, so if you want a nature look and a city look, we’ll grab both in one evening.

Put your passions in the frame

The photos people remember are the ones that show what you love. So bring it. If you play soccer, we’ll get the cleats and the ball. Musician? Bring the guitar. Bookworm — cozy up with a stack under a tree. Artist — hands, sketchbook, the real mess of your work. These are the little details that turn a nice portrait into unmistakably yours.

Try a theme

Summer is perfect for getting playful with a concept — a retro ’70s vibe with the wardrobe to match, a little Hollywood-glam drama, a soft storybook feel. A theme gives the whole session a throughline and lets a side of your personality come out to play. Bring me an idea at our consultation, or let me pitch a few.

Don’t forget props

The right object adds color, motion, and personality fast — balloons for a pop of celebration, an armful of fresh flowers, a vintage car, a bold accessory that’s very you. We won’t overload a frame, but a well-chosen prop or two gives your gallery real range and a few shots that make people smile.

Where the summer magic happens — Great Falls, Georgetown & Bethesda

Location is half the fun in summer. Great Falls Park, just over the river near McLean, gives us dramatic rock, water, and woods for an adventurous, natural feel. The Georgetown waterfront in DC brings brick, historic streets, and that riverside glow for a polished, grown-up city look. And downtown Bethesda is perfect for bright, walkable, Main-Street energy close to home. We can also start in my Rockville studio for a controlled, striking set before heading out.

Summer session prep tips

• Book early. Summer evenings and golden-hour slots fill fast, and so does senior season.
• Schedule for late afternoon. Softer light, easing heat, everyone at their best.
• Beat the heat. Bring water, blot-and-go for shine, and a small towel; we’ll build in shade breaks.
• Pack your looks and your gear. Two to four outfits, plus the sports, instruments, or hobby items that make it yours.
• Come with breathing room. The best frames show up once you’ve relaxed into it.
