Making Memories: Family Portrait Sessions in Rockville, Maryland

Every family thinks they’ll remember it — the exact height of the kids, the gap-toothed grin, the way the toddler still reaches up to be carried. And then a year passes, and the booster seat is gone, and you’re squinting at your phone trying to recall what their voice sounded like when it was still small.

That’s the quiet thing family portraits are really for. Not the holiday card, though you’ll get that too. They’re for holding onto a version of your family that is, right now, slipping by faster than you’d like.

I’m Erica Land, a Rockville-based portrait photographer, and family sessions are some of my favorite work all year — because I know exactly what these images become. Not wall art you walk past. The photo you’ll stand in front of in fifteen years, a little teary, thinking look how little they were.

That’s not a reason to wait until things calm down — that is the picture. Some families love the clean, cozy simplicity of my Rockville studio, especially with little ones and unpredictable weather. Others want to be outside, in the places that feel like home. This corner of Maryland makes that easy, and the light here is genuinely beautiful.

In the fall, I love the changing trees at Cabin John Regional Park right here in Rockville, and the trails and gardens around Brookside Gardens. In spring, there’s nothing like family photos among the cherry blossoms in Kenwood, over in Bethesda — one of the prettiest weeks of the whole year in our area. For families in Potomac and Bethesda who want that relaxed, natural feel, we’ve got parks, historic grounds, and quiet neighborhood spots that photograph like a dream.

And if the most meaningful place is your own backyard — the house you’re raising them in — that’s often the best choice of all.

An easy, low-pressure experience

I know wrangling everyone into coordinated outfits and out the door can feel like the hardest part. So I make the session itself the easy part.

I keep things relaxed and moving, especially with young kids — we play, we take breaks, we let the toddler be a toddler. I’ll guide you into natural poses, then say something ridiculous to get the real laughter instead of the frozen smiles. Pets are welcome. Props that mean something to your family are welcome. Grandparents visiting from out of town? Let’s get four generations in one frame while we can.

You don’t have to perform a perfect family. You just have to show up as yours.

A few tips for beautiful family photos

Before your session I’ll walk you through all of this, but the short version:

• Coordinate, don’t match. Pick two or three colors that go together and dress everyone within that palette. Skip the identical white-shirts-and-jeans look — a little variety reads warmer and more modern.
• Dress for the season and the setting. Soft, comfortable layers photograph beautifully, and comfortable kids are happy kids.
• Time it around the little ones. We’ll schedule around naps and moods, not against them. Morning or golden-hour sessions tend to bring the best light and the best behavior.
• Bring what’s meaningful. A favorite blanket, the family dog, a stroller full of snacks — real life makes the best photos.

In my Rockville studio and on location around the area — Cabin John Regional Park, Brookside Gardens, the Kenwood cherry blossoms in Bethesda, Potomac’s parks, or your own home. We’ll choose based on your family’s style and the season.

How long does a family session take, and what should we wear?
Most run one to two hours depending on your package. Choose coordinated (not matchy) outfits in two or three complementary colors, dressed for the season — I’ll send full guidance once we plan.

Can we bring pets, props, or grandparents?
Absolutely — pets, meaningful props, and extended family are all welcome and often make the best images. Tell me who and what you’d like included and we’ll plan for it.

When’s the best time of year for family photos?
Fall foliage and spring blossoms are stunning here, and holiday-card season books early. Any season works beautifully — the best time is really before the kids are any bigger.

When will we get our photos?
You’ll receive a curated online gallery within two to three weeks, ready to download, print, and share.
